Sinhagad
or Sinhgad, is a fortress located roughly 25 kilometres
(15 miles) from Pune, India. It is situated on a hill rising
800 metres above the surrounding countryside. Previously
called Kondana was renamed as Sinhagad, Shivaji Maharajs
words “Gad Aala, Pan Sinha Gela”, meaning “I
have won the Fort, but lost the lion” as the great
warrior Tanaji Malusare laid down his life to capture the
fort. The fort has been the site of many important battles.
It is also strategically located at the center of a string
of other forts such as Rajgad, Purandar and Torna.
